See the little black dots on the water? They're whirligig beetles, carnivorous beetles that hunt by swimming around on the surface. They have split eyes so they can see above and below the water. They dive underwater if they're threatened and can trap air beneath their wings, allowing them to stay down for extended periods. Whirligig beetles eat a variety of small aquatic insects and invertebrates and help with mosquito control too, they eat mosquito larvae that come to the surface to breathe. T
