The changes will go into effect in January to align with the launch of OMNY, the tap-and-ride system, on subways and buses.

On Tuesday, the MTA Board voted 11-0, with two abstentions, to approve fare hikes raising the base fare from $2.90 to $3.

The fare increase to $3, up from $2.90, will take effect in January, after the city’s transit system ends sales of the MetroCard. Other fares and tolls will also rise.

Though fares are hitting $3 for the first time, MTA officials said the increase would have been $3.14 if the agency followed inflation rates.

The increase comes as the MTA has collected $449.4 million from congestion pricing through August but loses as much as $1 billion per year to fare and toll evasion.
