A landfill in a small Central Florida town is building a new rail line in preparation to receive 250,000 tons of solid waste from Miami-Dade County per year through at least 2035.
Miami-Dade County will begin transporting 4,800 tons of garbage per week by rail to the Heart of Florida Landfill in Sumter County starting this summer, under a contract that could last until 2055.
