Humberto becomes a hurricane; chances of second system increase
TAMPA, Fla. ( WFLA )—Humberto is now a hurricane, while development chances are increasing for another disturbance in the Atlantic, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. Located about 465 miles northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands, Humberto is moving toward the northwest at about 3 mph.
The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a large tropical wave in the Atlantic that could develop into a tropical depression. Invest 94-L is producing disorganized showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds for most of the Windward and Leeward Islands. This wave is forecast to move west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph.
The still-powerful Hurricane Gabrielle is moving away from the U.S. but at least two tropical depressions may form in the next week, the NHC said.
Tropical Depression Nine is expected to become Hurricane Imelda, impacting the Southeast U.S. and possibly bringing heavy rain and storms.
The National Hurricane Cente r is tracking several systems in the Atlantic basin Sept. 20, and that includes Tropical Storm Gabrielle, which is expected to turn north and head in the direction of Bermuda, before becoming a hurricane.
Tropical Storm Gabrielle forms in the central Atlantic and is expected to become a hurricane over the weekend.
