Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives failed on Wednesday to pass a funding bill that included a controversial voting measure backed by Donald Trump, complicating efforts to avert a possible government shutdown at the end of the month.

It ran from Dec. 22, 2018 to Jan. 25, 2019, during the Trump administration. At 34 days, it was the longest government shutdown in history by a significant margin, as most shutdowns in recent decades have lasted two weeks or less.

Both Republicans and Democrats opposed the stopgap funding bill, which was tied to new rules requiring proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote.
