Denmark has temporarily banned civil drone flights in its airspace as it prepares to host a top European Union meeting on defense and the war in Ukraine, and after a surge of suspicious drone activity at several airports and military sites last week.

Denmark ordered a ban on Sunday on civil drone flights, after drones were observed at several military facilities overnight, following a week in which drone sorties caused the temporary closures of several Danish airports.

A spate of recent drone sightings near airports in Denmark and Norway has amplified security concerns in Europe.

Following repeated drone alerts in Denmark, the government in Copenhagen said on Monday it is facing a new reality. Since Thursday, there have been no significant disruptions to Danish air traffic, Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard said at a press conference.

Denmark is stepping up its drone defenses before European leaders meet in Copenhagen this week, as a new suspected drone intrusion temporarily shut airspace and intensified security concerns.
