India is investigating the work environment at Big Four accounting firm EY, the labour minister said on Thursday, after the death of a 26-year-old associate worker was blamed on stress by her mother who demanded accountability.

Amid outrage over the death of a 26-year-old chartered accountant, working with Ernst and Young (EY) India, the Union Government on Thursday said it has started a "thorough investigation" of allegations made by the deceased's mother.

Following the tragic death of 26-year-old Anna Sebastian Perayil, EY's Chairman expressed condolences, while the Union Labour Ministry announced an investigation into claims of an unsafe work environment.

The Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje confirmed that the investigation is underway, following allegations of an unsafe and exploitative work environment.

The government of India on September 19 initiated a probe into the circumstances leading to Ernst and Young (EY) employee Anna Perayil’s death, allegedly due to work stress.

The issue is also being taken up in the Parliament, as Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) Saket Gokhale said that he has formally written to the Labour Secretary of Maharashtra demanding an urgent investigation be launched into the working conditions at EY which allegedly led to the death of Perayil.
