Euro 2028: Northern Ireland to lose hosting rights over funding
Northern Ireland will lose hosting rights to games at Euro 2028 after the United Kingdom government announced on Friday that it will withdraw funding for the rebuilding of Casement Park.
Belfast’s Casement Park to no longer host Euro 2028 matches
Casement Park in Belfast has been stripped of its status as a Euro 2028 host stadium as the UK government cannot commit to providing the funding for it to be built in time for the tournament. The government state there is “significant risk” the stadium would not be completed in time and estimated the project could now cost over £400million.

Five matches were due to be played at the derelict stadium during the event, which is being hosted by the UK and Ireland.
UK government scraps funding for stadium upgrade in Northern Ireland
The UK government had promised to help fund the upgrade but Northern Ireland secretary Hilary Benn said in a letter to the region’s communities minister Gordon Lyons that building costs had risen “dramatically” from £180mn when the bid was won “to potentially over £400mn” now.
